Lavinia leads the charge!

Join Lavinia Petrie, our 2017 O’Keefe Challenge’s Age Graded Winner in the 5km Run / Walk against Dementia

Did you know Dementia is now the second leading cause of death of Australians? Dementia is the single greatest cause of disability in older Australians (aged 65 years or older). The challenges of appropriately and respectfully caring and supporting people living with dementia is one that families, local communities and governments at all levels are grappling with.

The 5km run/Walk Against Dementia event is designed to be a family-friendly and less competitive event similar to the ever-popular parkrun events. A new course has been created and will start and finish at the Barrack Reserve oval in the heart of Heathcote on Sunday 22 April. We are aiming to encourage the participation of our local community in promoting health, fitness and your wellbeing. Times are not as important and the aim is to finish.

Participants will run and walk out of the Reserve and take in the liquid ambers in their autumn glory before following the beautiful McIvor Creek Trail to Shakespere St. Here, they’ll hit the bitumen for a fast and flowing return via Beauchamp, Pohlman and Wright streets.

We have a target of 100 participants, with a field limit of 200. Participants will be guided by experienced volunteers and will all be offered drink and aid stations along the course.

Online pre-registrations and official event timing have been introduced for this distance for the first time.  .

Entry fees will start at $5 person to encourage participation.  All participants will receive a specially crafted ‘Forget Me Not’ (symbol for dementia) medals of participation at the finish line.

Lavinia Petrie, world champion runner, and our age grade gold prize winner from last year will be participating in this event   Lavinia said “awareness and understanding about dementia is still alarmingly low and the prevalence of dementia is growing. Not only is dementia the second leading cause of death of Australians it is the leading cause of death of women in Australia. Sadly, it is fatal and there is currently no cure.  So join me as we run and walk against dementia”.

All money raised from this 5km event will be donated to support the work of the Heathcote Dementia Alliance to assist with the creation of a state-of-the-art facility for those living with dementia and the Heathcote Dementia Friendly Community Project.
